PermaLink Focused and Fair training09/01/2005 10:17 AM
Here at KaraKum our horses go through a training program that is based on our experience and good ideas and practices we have picked up from good horse people from around the world. Our program is dynamic and open to improvements. We use two lead words in our training of horses, every interaction with the horse must be focused and fair. Shortly this means that when you interact with the horse, the horse must always be focused on you, and that you cannot ask more from your horse than what the horse has been given the possibilities (by you) to perform. Orion had some focus training this morning, he had to walk with me from the herd, have a bath, stand in his stall and eat a treat and then walk back to the herd. For a yearling this I think is enough of training, I cannot ask them to focus on me for more than 15-20 minutes. Orion did very good, he left the herd without resistance, he walked by my side listening to me and being attentive, he stood still and focused on me, not the hose, when he was showered, he calmly walked into his stall and took his treat without even bothering about his herd or the environment. Good boy! The fairness concept has quite an impact on our work, it involves quality issues like stable management, selection and so forth, but it has also led to one of our policies that there are no stupid horses in our stables! Instead of saying stupid horse, you take a step back and think, what did I do wrong to make my horse respond in this way. We have found this way of working our horses very rewarding.
