Yesterday the outer bands of  Alberto, the first tropical storm for this years hurrican season swept over our farm.

We got a lot of rain and some wind, and we took in the horses earlier than usual so that they could watch the rain from their stalls.
Today when Alberto came in over land north of us we have windy and cool weather, the horses have been racing all morning, trying to catch the wind I guess.
The tropical storms and hurricanes bring a very low pressure and somehow, the low pressure affects the metabolism of the horses. Many vets and experienced horse owners have told us that when a tropical weather system is approaching there is a dramatic increase of colic in horses.
Yesterday we tried to be careful so we gave our horses extra electrolytes to make them drink as well as several but small portions of hay and also several and small portions of alfa-alfa cubes. We also make sure that we have Banamine handy as it might take some time to get hold of a vet during a stormy night.
So far so good though, all horses are fine and we are happy for the dry weather today so that the horses are having a possibility to race around the pasture before next round of heavy rains.
