PermaLink We brought an older stallion home last Sunday and he has been doing his job 02/06/2007 10:09 AM
teasing the mares, today 6 of our 7 mares are showing heat, they are all shedding and spring feelings are high here in spite of

an unusually chilly northern wind today. We suspect this is a first heat of this season so we will be keeping the records and see for how many days the individual mare will stay in heat. Plans are to breed in March if the cycles have become regular by then. Here in Florida we think it's a good time to have the foals at the end of February, beginning of March. Orion is looking at the spectacle with mild surprised, but he actually tried to talk some mares over to his side this morning.
Until now, we did not realise how much we have missed the horse breeding since we left Sweden.

Lots of fun - Darginka was in heat this past weekend as well so the vet is coming out to do a check on her. I hope you will let us know who you are breeding to whom!!

Kerri, do you have breeding plans this year for Darginka? If so have you picked a stallion? We will announce our breeding plans as they are finalised.

I am still deciding between 2 stallions! It is hard - I wish I could see them. The vet is coming out on Friday to do a fertility exam (since she is 7 and was turned out with stallions I am a bit nervous, but I'm hoping that it was because she was so underweight that she didn't take). I have a really good repro-vet, Jaun Samper, so I have high hopes. I'm deciding between a safe bet stallion for performance with proven offspring and an unknown that may give me the fast endurance qualities that I am looking for, plus height. I think I may go with the safe bet (Metman) this year and sell the foal and then go with the other next year. I'll decide this month! Thanks for asking!!

So it is Metman!! Now just wish us luck that she takes! We are breeding her at the end of the month.

All the best, Kerry-Jo with the breeding! I wish the foal exceeds your expectations.

There are no real safe bets when it comes to producing a foal, that's what makes breeding such an adventure, on the planning stage everything is possible but once (hopefully) the foal is on the ground what you see is what you get! Good luck!
