Will be interesting to follow how everyone turns out. Especially look forward to the Merdjen-Agilas offspring!

Jessica, Todd, how come a cremello is born from a pair, where one of the parents is black? Or was Ararat not black in reality?

Hi,
Black horses as well as grey horses can carry the Ccr gene and not show it. The Ccr gene dilutes "brown" not black (unless homozygous). For example, the mane, legs and tail on a buckskin are still black but the body is diluted. There are lots of cremello/perlino foals from black and grey parents. Ararat himself had 8 cremello foals. His dam Karta was palomino, this is where he got the Ccr gene from. Gayaz's dam Pampa is an example of a grey having the Ccr. Gayaz is cremello but also carries the grey gene, he is homozygous Ccr so the grey is hidden. There are also black homozygous Ccr horses (maybe Agilas), but you don't know until you breed them as cremello/perlino/smokey horses look the same....

p.s. There is a DNA "red test" now. So you can actually test a horse and see if it is a cremello or a perlino. Great way to breed palomino horses! Just get a chestnut and a cremello horse and they will ALWAYS produce palominos! We tested Yasmine and Asman. Asman is cremello and Yasmine is perlino. d.s.

Thanks for the explanation, Todd. So, is my understanding correct that one dose of Cremello gene in a black horse results in the horse looking black (never buckskin), but two doses result in a Perlino look?

Hello Maria,

One dose of creme dilution gene in a black horse results in smoky black, which may look black or dark brown. Two doses of creme dilution gene results in smoky cream. One dose in bay horse --> buckskin, and two doses --> perlino. One dose in sorrel/chestnut --> palomino, and two doses --> cremello.

There is an easy colour chart for the dilution gene in CPEA:s homepage, you can read more from there:

Hi Jessica,
will you not include Pekhimli in your breeding selections this time round?
